Background

Tony Ugoh attended Westfield High School in Houston, Texas. He was considered to be on the of the top 15 overall prospects in the State of Texas and one of the top 10 offensive tackle prospects in the nation. He was recruited by Florida, Florida State, Arizona, Texas, and Oklahoma; however, he opted to attend the University of Arkansas instead. He saw action in two games as a true freshman before suffering a knee injury, effectively ending his season. He applied for and was awarded a medical redshirt for the 2002 season. He served primarily as a reserve offensive tackle the following season, seeing action in eight games on the year. Tony earned the starting left tackle job as a sophomore, starting 10 of 11 games that season. He missed the Georgia game due to kidney stones. After having problems staying on the field in previous years (11 Jr, 14 Sr), Tony was able to start every game at left tackle his final two years at Arkansas. He developed into one of the better tackles in the nation as a senior. Tony was also a four-year member of the track and field team where he competed in the discus, weight throw, and shot put events.

Analysis

Tony Ugoh has a good deal of experience against top competition, having started the past three seasons at left tackle for Arkansas in the SEC. He has a good combination of size, strength and athleticism for a tackle. He has long arms which allow him to keep defenders away from his body in pass protection. He is an outstanding run blocker who can get to the second level and take out a linebacker. His strong upper body makes it difficult for defenders to get by him once he gets his hands on them. Tony lacks the “mean streak” you like to see in an offensive lineman and he needs to work on finishing his blocks. He also needs to do a better job of displaying good technique on a more consistent basis. He has problems with his footwork at times, making him susceptible to speed rushers coming off the edge. The good thing is all of his shortcomings can be solved with good coaching. Tony would benefit from bulking up and increasing his lower body strength and he does have the frame in which to do so. Tony Ugoh has the potential to develop into a very good offensive tackle at the next level. He may need to start out on the right side early on in his career before moving to left tackle. He has been moving up draft boards with a good senior season and a solid performance at the Senior Bowl. He should be a first day pick in the 2007 NFL draft.
