Background

Travis Wilson attended Creekview High School in Carrollton, Texas where he played football, basketball, and ran track. He played cornerback, receiver, and punter on the football team. As a junior he caught 27 passes for 400 yards and 7 touchdowns. As a senior he caught 42 passes for 1,098 yards and 14 touchdowns on offense. He had 17 tackles and 4 interceptions on defense and averaged over 33 yards as a kickoff return specialist. Travis helped Creekview to a 15-6 record over his final two seasons there. He was considered to be one of the top 25 receiver prospects in the nation and accepted a scholarship to the University of Oklahoma. He saw action as a backup receiver and special teams player as a true freshman, finishing with 5 receptions for 50 yards and a touchdown in 2002. As a sophomore, Wilson caught 25 passes for 295 yards and 4 touchdowns. He was named academic all-big twelve for his performance in the classroom that year. Travis had his most productive season as a junior, finishing with career highs in receptions (50), yards (660), and touchdowns (11). He was named honorable mention all-big twelve for his performance as a junior. He finished his career at Oklahoma with 25 receptions for 310 yards and 1 touchdown as a senior.

Analysis

Travis Wilson has good combination of size and strength for an NFL receiver. He runs good routes and does an excellent job of adjusting to the football while it is in the air. He is a physical receiver who will go over the middle and make a difficult catch in traffic. He also has enough speed to make plays down the field. Wilson is a reliable receiver with good hands, but he does have a tendency to “body catch” at times. He needs to improve his blocking to become a more complete receiver but he does have the size and strength to be effective in that area. Travis Wilson’s stock has gone down after a disappointing senior season; however, he has a good deal of upside and should find himself selected on the second day of the 2006 NFL draft.
