Background

Travis S. Williams is the cousin of Pittsburgh Steelers running back Duce Staley. He attended Spring Valley High School in Columbia, South Carolina where he played football, basketball, and ran track. As a junior, Travis totaled 137 tackles and two sacks on his way to all-region honors. As a senior he finished with 160 tackles, 5 sacks, and 4 forced fumbles. He was named all-region for the second consecutive season and first team all-state. He was also named area defensive MVP. Travis set school records for tackles in a game (17), solo tackles in a season (110), total tackles in a season (160), and career tackles (297). He was named MVP of the North Carolina-South Carolina all-star game and was considered on of the top overall prospects in the state of South Carolina. He accepted a scholarship to play at the University of Auburn where he sat out the 2001 season as a redshirt. He saw limited action in 2002, totaling 9 tackles, an interception, and a forced fumble. In the spring of 2003, Williams was named the teams most improved linebacker and earned the starting job on the weakside. He finished the season with 67 tackles and a forced fumble, missing just one game with a strained rotator cuff. His junior season was his best season in college, totaling 80 tackles, 2 sacks, 2 interceptions, and a forced fumble on his way to first team all-SEC honors. Travis received the Pat Dye leadership award after spring drills in 2005 and received his bachelor's degree in May. His senior season was another productive year for Williams. He finished second on the team in tackles with 68 stops on the year. He also had 2 1/2 sacks, 1 interception, and two forced fumbles on the year.

Analysis

Travis Williams has a good deal of experience, having started the past three seasons at weakside linebacker for the Auburn Tigers. During that time he has proven to be a very durable player, only missing two games due to injury. He is an instinctive player who always seems to be around the football. He has good range and makes plays all over the field. He is very quick, but lacks great timed speed for a player his size. He is good run stopper who takes good angles to the ball carrier and has the ability to chase running backs down from behind. He is good in coverage with solid hands and fluid hips. He possesses good leadership ability who is well-known for being a vocal leader both in the locker room and on the playing field. The biggest problem with Williams is his lack of size. He will have problems getting off blocks of offensive linemen at the next level. He really needs to bulk up some and increase his strength but he does not have the frame to get much bigger than he is right now. He has a chance to be a second day pick or an undrafted free agent as a special teams player. He could also make the move to strong safety in the NFL.
