Background

Trent Edwards attended Los Gatos High School in Los Gatos, California where he played quarterback on the football team. As a junior he completed 125 of 160 passes for 2529 yards and 29 touchdowns with just 4 interceptions. His completion percentage of 78.1% was a state record. He was named first team all-league and all-state. As a senior he completed 154 of 213 passses for 2,535 yards and 29 touchdowns with just 3 interceptions. He was named first team all-state, all-league, and league MVP. Trent led his team to a combined record of 26-0 his final two seasons in high school. He was widely considered to be one of the top 5 quarterback prospects in the nation and he accepted a scholarship to Stanford University where he sat out the 2002 season as a redshirt. He saw action in eight games the following year, starting four. He missed the last game due to a leg injury. Trent finished the season completing 77 of 170 passes for 750 yards and 4 touchdowns and 9 interceptions. He began his sophomore year as the team's starting quarterback, starting nine games, missing the last two due to injury. He finished the season completing 149 of 274 passes for 1,732 yards and 9 touchdowns with 11 interceptions. His junior season would be Edwards' best season in college. For the first time he started all eleven games, completing 168 of 268 passes for 1,934 yards and 17 touchdowns with just 7 interceptions. He was voted team MVP by his teammates at the conclusion of the season. Edwards was voted team-captain by his teammates proior to his senior season. He completed 94 of 156 attempts for 1,027 yards and 6 touchdowns with 6 interceptions before having his senior season cut short due to a broken foot. His injury caused him to miss the final five games of his senior season.

Analysis

Trent Edwards is an experienced quarterback who started 31 games for Stanford over the past four seasons. Trent displays good leadership qualitites and was voted team-captain by his teammates. He has prototypical size for an NFL quarterback. He has a quick release, good accuracy, and the arm strength to make all the throws required of a quarterback at the next level. He is a tough player who took a beating behind a very poor offensive line in college. He will stand tall in the pocket and deliver the football with a defender in his face. He has the athleticism to avoid the rush, get out of the pocket, and make an accurate throw on the run. He can also make a play with his feet when needed. He does have a tendency to hold onto the ball too long which was the cause of some of his problems at Stanford. He made poor decisisons early on in his career which led to too many interceptions. He did improve in that area as a junior and it showed up in the stats. Another question with Edwards is injury problems he's had. He only had one season where he started every game. He missed the final game of his freshman year with a leg injury, the final two games of his sophomore year with a shoulder injury, and the last 5 games of his senior year due to a broken foot. He was also knocked out of a game or two each season. Many of his problems in college were due to the fact that he played on a poor team and behind a very poor offensive line. He is a better prospect than the statistics would indicate and he has a chance to be selected on the first day of the 2007 NFL draft.
