Background

Tye Hill was a two-sport athlete in high school, playing football and running track. For the track team, Hill was the 400m state champion as a junior and a member of the state championship 4x100m relay team. Tye played running back on his school’s football team, rushing for 1,445 yards and scoring 16 touchdowns as a senior, despite only playing in seven games that year. Coming out of high school, Tye Hill was one of the top running back prospects in the state of South Carolina. He was recruited by Auburn, North Carolina, and South Carolina, but he opted to attend the University of Clemson instead. As a freshman, Hill was Clemson’s third leading rusher, gaining 225 yards on 42 attempts with two touchdowns. As a sophomore Tye was moved to the defensive side of the ball where he immediately earned a starting cornerback spot opposite Justin Miller. Tye started 11 games that year, recording 37 tackles, breaking up 7 passes and picking off two more. He was named Clemson’s defensive rookie of the year by the coaching staff for his efforts. As a junior, Hill set the school record for passes defensed in a season with his 21 pass breakups. He became only the second player in Clemson history to be named most improved player in two consecutive seasons. After losing star cornerback Justin Miller to the NFL draft, Hill had no problem filling the teams’ top cornerback spot as a senior. He recorded a career high 53 tackles with 7 pass breakups and a career high 3 interceptions. In addition to being one of the best defensive backs in the nation over the past couple seasons, Hill has also been an all-ACC selection and national champion on the school’s track team.

Analysis

Over the past few seasons, Clemson cornerback Tye Hill has developed into one of the best cover corners in the nation. He doesn’t intercept a lot of passes, but he has the speed to stay with any receiver that lines up against him and he is very aggressive when it comes to going after the football, breaking up a school record 21 passes as a junior, despite not picking off a single pass that season. Hill can get a bit overaggressive at times which can lead to a big play going the other way. He only has three years experience on the defensive side of the ball so he is still learning the position. The good thing is he has not yet reached his full potential and he has tons of raw talent. The biggest question when it comes to Tye Hill is his lack of ideal size for the cornerback position. He is listed at 5-10 180 but he is believed to be even smaller than that. This can cause matchup problems when he is forced to cover some of the bigger receivers in the NFL. Despite his lack of size, Hill is an outstanding cover corner who could really move up the boards with an impressive showing at the combine.
