Tyrone Moss attended Ely High School in Pompano Beach, Florida where he was a three-year starter at running back. As a sophomore he rushed for over 2,500 yards. As a junior he carried the ball 201 times for 2,100 yards. He led Ely to a state championship as a senior, rushing for 2,313 yards and 35 touchdowns. He also caught 10 passes for 164 yards on the season. He finished his career with over 7,000 yards and was considered to be one of the top five prospects in the nation. He was highly recruited by Virginia Tech, but he opted to attend the University of Miami instead. He became an immediate contributor for the Hurricanes, rushing for 511 yards and 5 touchdowns on 107 attempts as a true freshman. As a sophomore he finished second on the team in rushing with 445 yards and 6 touchdowns on 102 attempts. As a junior, Moss led the team in rushing with 701 yards and 12 touchdowns on 137 attempts, before a torn ACL ended his season a month early. He had surgery to repair in mid-November and was able to return for the second game of his senior season after sitting out the first game due to a suspension.
Analysis
Tyrone Moss has a great deal of experience, having seen significant action carrying the ball for Miami since his freshman year. He has a good combination of size and speed for a running back. He runs hard between the tackles and has good vision and excellent balance. He has the speed to get to the edge and turn the corner. He is difficult to bring down and will run through arm tackles. He has tremendous lower body strength which allows him to break tackles and gain additional yardage. He does a good job of finishing his runs. Tyrone lost 15 pounds prior to his junior season which increased his speed and quickness, allowing him to break longer runs on a more consistent basis. He was known to have a questionable work ethic early on in his career but he has improved his final two seasons. He doesn’t offer much as a receiver out of the backfield and wasn’t used much in the Miami passing game (8 receptions in 4 years) but he is a good pass blocker. He was suspended for the first game of his senior season after violating the team’s academic policy. Tyrone is just over a year removed from surgery to repair a torn ACL he suffered during the 2005 season. This is something that will definitely be checked at the combine after Moss carried the ball a career low 66 times as a senior. Player News Feed
