Victor Abiamiri is one of three children. His brothers, Rob and Paschal, both played football at the University of Maryland. Rob signed with the Ravens as an undrafted free agent in 2005. Victor attended Gilman High School in Baltimore, Maryland where he was a three-sport athlete as a member of the football, basketball, and track teams. He was a three-time all-conference performer in basketball and track. He was MVP of the basketball team as a junior and senior. He was also MVP of the track team his final season. He served as team captain on both teams his senior season. Victor played defensive end on the football team, totaling 16 sacks as a junior. As a senior he served as team captain, finishing with 52 tackles, 12 sacks, 3 forced fumbles, and an interception, helping Gilman to a 10-0 record on the season. He finished his career with a total of 45 sacks and 63 tackles for loss. He was selected to play in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl where he had two sacks. He was considered to be one of the top 25 overall prospects in the nation and he was recruited by Maryland, Miami, North Carolina, and Stanford. He was originally expected to sign with Maryland, but he opted to attend Notre Dame instead. He saw action in all 12 games, starting 5 contests as a true freshman. He finished the season with 22 tackles and a sack. As a sophomore, Victor saw action in every game as a reserve defensive end, totaling 15 tackles and 2 sacks on the year. The following spring, Victor missed part of spring practices due to a leg injury. He returned to earn a starting position, finishing with a career high 48 tackles on the season. He also had 8 sacks and a forced fumble. He was named Notre Dame’s “defensive lineman of the year” at the conclusion of the season. Victor racked up 43 tackles as a senior. He finished with career highs in sacks (10 ˝) and forced fumbles (2).
Analysis
Victor Abiamiri has two years starting experience against top competition playing for Notre Dame. He has a good combination of size and athleticism for a defensive end. He is a hard worker with a non-stop motor. He has long arms which allow him to keep blockers away from his body, as well as knock down passes at the line of scrimmage. He has a quick first step, allowing him to beat most offensive tackles off the snap. He is an excellent pass rusher (18 ˝ sacks in two years) with good closing speed getting to the quarterback. He is strong at the point of attack and a solid tackler in the running game. His athleticism allows him to chase down running backs from behind or drop back into coverage when needed. Abiamiri does have problems shedding blocks of bigger, stronger offensive tackles at times. He is a candidate to switch to outside linebacker in a 3-4 defensive scheme. If he stays at defensive end, he would benefit from bulking up and increasing his strength and he does have the frame in which to do so. Durability could be a cause for concern due to him having tendonitis in his knee. Victor Abiamiri is a versatile player who could project as a defensive end in a 4-3 or an outside linebacker in a 3-4. He has a good deal of upside and should be a first day pick in the 2007 NFL draft. Player News Feed
