Wali Lundy was raised by his grandmother after losing both of his parents at a young age. His father, Brian Lundy passed away after suffering a stroke when Wali was only four years old. He lost his mother, Joann Lundy when he was six years old. At age 13, Wali nearly passed away himself. It was discovered that he had scar tissue blocking his intestines, if he hadn’t had surgery that day, he could’ve died within a few days. Wali attended Holy Cross High School in Willingboro, New Jersey where he played football, basketball, and ran track. Wali scored over 1,000 points in his career as a basketball player. On the football team he played wide receiver as a junior and running back as a senior. As a junior, Wali caught 50 passes for 1,002 yards and 9 touchdowns. He also rushed for 750 yards and 11 more touchdowns. He added two more touchdowns on punt returns. He led the school to a state championship and earned all-state and all-American honors that season. As a senior, Wali rushed for 2,030 yards and 30 touchdowns on the year. He also caught 29 passes for 411 yards and 6 receiving touchdowns. He was considered to be one of the top 10 players in the state of New Jersey and one of the top 20 running back prospects in the nation. He accepted a scholarship to the University of Virginia where he became an immediate contributor. As a freshman he rushed for 826 yards and scored 6 touchdowns on 196 carries. He also caught 58 passes for 435 yards and 4 touchdowns. He was named to numerous freshman all-American teams and was named MVP of the Continental Tire Bowl. As a sophomore, Wali rushed for a career high 929 yards and 10 touchdowns on 227 carries. He added 29 receptions for 253 yards and 4 more touchdowns. He was named second team all-ACC for his play as a sophomore. As a junior in 2004, Wali totaled 864 rushing yards and a career high 17 rushing touchdowns on 175 attempts. He caught 12 passes for 145 yards on the season as well. Wali finished out his career at Virginia with 574 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns on 144 attempts. He also caught 15 passes for 62 yards and another score.
Analysis
Wali Lundy has a great deal of experience, having received a significant number of carries each of his four years at Virginia. Although he lacks great size, Lundy is a tough runner who has deceptive power and runs well between the tackles. He is also a great short yardage runner with a nose for the endzone. He has good vision and does an excellent job of following his blockers. He lacks ideal speed and struggles to get to the outside at times. He is elusive in the open field and will make defenders miss, but his lack of breakaway speed allows him to get caught from behind often. He has good strength for a player his size but he doesn’t break many tackles. He is a solid blocker and an excellent receiver out of the backfield with soft hands. He does need to improve his route running though. Wali had some injury problems in college and he split carries most of his career so there is reason to question whether he could be an every down back at the next level. He also had some fumbling problems at Virginia and needs to work on holding onto the football. Wali Lundy could make a nice third down back and short yardage runner in the NFL. He should be a late round pick on draft day. Player News Feed
