Background

Will Allen attended Cypress Falls High School in Houston, Texas where he was a three-year starter on the offensive line. As a junior, Allen was named second team all-district. As a senior he was named first team all-city, first team all-district, and second team all-state. He accepted a scholarship to the University of Texas where he sat out the 2001 season as a redshirt. The following year he saw action in eight games as the backup center He was named first team academic all-big twelve for his accomplishments in the classroom that year. In the spring of 2003, Allen was named the team’s most improved offensive player. He started 11 games at right guard as a sophomore, missing the Texas A&M game due to injury. As a junior he was again the starting right guard before missing the final four regular season games due to injury. He did return to start in the Rose Bowl. Allen returned to start at right guard for the third consecutive season as a senior, helping the Longhorns to a national championship.

Analysis

Will Allen has a ton of experience against top competition, having started the past three seasons at right guard for the Texas Longhorns in the Big Twelve. He has good size for a guard with the frame to add more bulk. He has long arms which allow him to keep the defenders away from his body. He uses good technique and is an excellent run blocker who does a good job of finishing his blocks. He is a solid pass blocker who displays good footwork, but he could still improve his pass blocking technique. He can be a bit overaggressive at times which causes him to miss some blocks. He isn’t a great athlete and he will struggle at times when forced to block in space. Durability could be a cause for concern. Allen seems to miss a couple games every year with minor injuries. Will Allen is an intelligent player and a hard worker. He did get some playing time at center as a redshirt freshman and he could project as a center or guard at the next level. He should be a second day pick in the 2006 NFL draft.
