Round: 2 | Pick: #7 | Overall: #39 | Team: Philadelphia Eagles

Background

Winston Justice was a teammate of USC players Darnell Bing and Hershel Dennis at Poly High School in Long Beach, California. Together they won three CIF division titles and compiled a 39-1-1 record at Poly. Justice earned a starting spot on the teams’ offensive line as a sophomore. As a senior he recorded 38 pancake blocks, was named second team all-state and all-American. He accepted a scholarship to USC where he earned the starting right tackle job one game into his freshman year. He got his first start on his 18th birthday making him the first USC offensive lineman to start as a true freshman since 1996. He was named first team freshman all-pac ten and first team freshman all-American for his play in 2002. After the season Justice has arthroscopic surgery to repair a dislocated shoulder. In July of 2003, Justice pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor account of solicitation of prostitution in Long Beach. In his second straight year as a starter, Justice only missed two games due to a sprained ankle and was named all-pac ten honorable mention at the conclusion of the season. In February 2004 he pointed a toy gun at a USC student in a parking lot. Justice pleaded no contest to exhibition of a replica firearm and was sentenced to 60 days of electronic monitoring and three years’ probation. He was suspended from school for two semesters following the incident and redshirted the 2004 season. During his time away from school and the team, Justice trained with former Mike Tyson trainer Freddie Roach in Hollywood. He considered applying for early entry into the 2005 NFL draft but opted to return to school instead. In 2005 Justice returned to the team and his starting right tackle position. He earned all-pac ten honorable mention for his performance that year. Since he redshirted the 2004 season, Justice had one year of eligibility remaining. However, he decided to leave USC early and enter the 2006 NFL draft.

Analysis

Winston Justice has a good deal of starting experience against top competition, having started three of the last four years at right tackle for the USC Trojans. He has a good combination of size and strength for a tackle and has the frame to get even bigger in the future. He is a good all-around tackle who is both a strong run blocker and pass protector. Some may say that since Winston played right tackle in college, he cannot play left tackle in the NFL. This is not true. He played right tackle to protect left-handed quarterback Matt Leinart’s blindside at USC. Winston is an excellent athlete with the quick feet you look for in a tackle. He rarely gets beat by speed rushers in pass protection. He has been very durable during his time at USC with only a couple minor injuries. He did have surgery on his shoulder after his freshman year and he missed two games with an ankle injury as a sophomore. The biggest question when it comes to Justice is his character. He had an incident with a prostitute and an incident where he pointed a toy gun at a student while at USC. Winston Justice has the ability to play right tackle or the ever important left tackle in the NFL. He has as much upside as any tackle in the draft and should be a first round pick in April. The only question is how far his character issues will drop him on draft day.
